Good story. Skylar was at a crossroads in her professional and personal life. Professionally does she stay at her job earning the steady paycheck, but denied the challenges to grow? Does she stick with the traditional relationship which had not been satisfying and increasing her levels of stress and unhappiness? Into her life steps Lo, a freelance journalist and love interest and woman like herself. With Lo stress and lack of fulfillment at the job is tolerable, her personal life finally happy, But at what cost... Skylar must decide are family and "safety" in a career worth losing her lover Lo or can she have all she ever wanted? The greater the risk the better the rewards. J Nichols addresses these quest in this romance.
OMG! This is my first book by the author, and she ,hit it out of the park! The main characters Skylar and Lo were smart, funny go getters. Both characters were looking for love, but not really expected in each other, yet they go for it an a very interesting story unfolds. To the author,this is one of the best BLF books ever written, please don't give up on the genre your writing expression is awesome! I look forward to reading more from J. Nichole
This was a.sweet story of a straight girl meeting and being attracted to another woman. There are many layers to this story. You have Sky and her religious mother and absentee father and their relationship dynamics change after she brings homes a woman. Ultimately Sky must decide if she is going to let the opinions of others get in the way of her future with Lo. I absolutely loved Sky and Lo, but the fire and angst wasn't portrayed well in their actions when they were together. I think the other storyline kind of overshadowed that aspect. I also think that was a missed opportunity with Sky coming to terms with being attracted to another feminine woman.
A Girl Like Me is one of the sweetest love stories I have read in a long time. The way the relationship progressed between the two women was so organic. They had challenges to overcome and I felt that they dealt with it in a real way. It was a story that I read in one sitting because I wanted to know how things would turn out and I am happy I did. J. Nichole is a great storyteller and I look forward to reading more of her work if it is anything like this. It was great to see an organic story of two Black women in love that was romantic and genuine.I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
This was a good read. Jo and Sky are a cute couple once they became a couple. Sky was never attracted to a woman. Jo never wanted to date a straight girl. Then throw in a bunch of crazy friends, a unhappy mother, and an absentee father. What an interesting tale it makes. Read their story. You will enjoy.
